Julia Ducournau is a French film director and screenwriter.
She attended film school at La Fémis in Paris, where she studied screenwriting. Her audacious debut short JUNIOR that ingeniously uses body horror to peel away layers of adolescent anxieties won the Petit Rail d’Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Her first feature, RAW, a compelling and audacious exploration of cannibalism and primal desires set within the confines of a veterinary school, won FIPRESCI prize at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
In 2020, she directed two episodes of the American show SERVANT, created and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, for Apple TV. In 2021, she presented her second film TITANE at the Cannes Film Festival, a bold, surreal exploration of metamorphosis and the connection between human and machine, and won the Palme d’Or, becoming the second woman to win this award, 28 years after Jane Campion. She returns to Cannes in 2023 as part of the jury of the Official Selection’s competition.
She has directed 2 episodes of the upcoming series The New Look, out in 2024, which relates how fashion icon Christian Dior and his contemporaries (such as Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain and Cristóbal Balenciaga) endured the horrors of the Second World War and launched modern fashion. Julia recently directed the YSL launch campaign for MYSLF fragrance starring Austin Butler.
